How to Turn an Old Dresser Into a Bathroom Vanity

A new bathroom vanity with real wood and drawers that close properly can run $800 to $1,500, and the cheap flat-pack ones swell the first time water sits on the top. Meanwhile an old solid dresser sells for $40 at a yard sale.

A new bathroom vanity with real wood and drawers that close properly can run $800 to $1,500, and the cheap flat-pack ones swell the first time water sits on the top. Meanwhile an old solid dresser sells for $40 at a yard sale. Turning a dresser into a bathroom vanity is one of the most satisfying upcycles you can do, as long as you plan the plumbing and the waterproofing before you pick up a saw.

I have built six of these for clients and two for my own house. The ones that lasted had three things in common: the right dresser, a sealed top, and drawers that were rebuilt around the pipes instead of hacked. Here is the full process.

Choosing a dresser that will survive a bathroom

Not every dresser is a good candidate. Measure your space first, then shop with a tape measure in your pocket.

  • Height. Standard vanity height is about 32 to 36 inches including the sink. A dresser at 30 to 34 inches works for a vessel sink that sits on top. For an undermount or drop-in sink, aim for 33 to 35 inches.
  • Depth. 18 to 21 inches is ideal. Shallower than 17 inches leaves almost no room behind the bowl for the faucet.
  • Construction. Solid wood or good plywood only. Particleboard and MDF carcasses fall apart once they meet moisture from a slow drip.
  • Legs. A dresser on legs is easier to plumb and easier to clean under. A solid plinth base can be cut, but it adds work.

Avoid valuable antiques. If the piece has original hardware, a maker's label or fine veneer, it may be worth more left alone. Our post on upcycling old furniture versus preserving an antique covers how to tell the difference before you start cutting.

Picking the sink and faucet first

Buy the sink and faucet before you modify anything. Their dimensions decide every cut.

Sink typeProsWatch out for
VesselEasiest cut, one drain hole onlyAdds 5 to 6 inches of height, needs a tall or wall-mounted faucet
Drop-inForgiving cut, rim hides rough edgesCut edge of the top needs thorough sealing
UndermountClean lookNeeds a stone or solid surface top, not the original wood

For a first project, a vessel or drop-in sink on the original wood top is the sensible route. Most drop-in sinks come with a paper template. Keep it.

Tools and materials

  • Jigsaw with a fine wood blade and a 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch hole saw
  • Drill, clamps, a square and a pencil
  • Oscillating multi-tool for cutting drawer backs
  • 120 and 220 grit sandpaper
  • Oil-based or water-based marine varnish, or a two-part epoxy for the top
  • Silicone sealant rated for kitchens and bathrooms
  • Paint and primer if you are changing the color

Budget: around $120 to $200 for finishes and supplies, plus the dresser, sink and faucet.

Step by step: turning a dresser into a bathroom vanity

  1. Empty and label. Pull all the drawers and number them in pencil on the inside. Drawers are often hand-fitted to their own opening.
  2. Mark the plumbing. Measure the height of the drain and supply lines coming out of the wall, and their distance from the side walls. Transfer those marks to the back of the dresser.
  3. Cut the back. Cut a rectangle out of the back panel large enough for the drain trap and both supply valves, usually about 12 inches wide by 16 inches tall. Leave the top rail and corners intact for strength.
  4. Cut the top. Center the sink template, check the faucet will clear the wall, then drill a starter hole and cut with the jigsaw. Cut slightly inside the line and sand to it. For a vessel sink, use the hole saw for the drain, plus another hole for the faucet if it is deck-mounted.
  5. Rebuild the drawers. The top drawer usually hits the sink bowl. Either convert it to a false front, fixed in place with screws from inside, or shorten the drawer box to clear the bowl. Lower drawers often need a U-shaped notch cut out of the back to clear the trap. Rebuild the drawer back to the notch with thin plywood so the drawer stays square.
  6. Sand and finish. Sand the case at 120 then 220. Prime and paint, or oil if you are keeping the wood visible.
  7. Seal the top. This is the step that decides whether it lasts. Apply at least three coats of marine varnish, sanding lightly between coats, or one flood coat of epoxy. Seal the cut edge of the sink hole twice, as end grain soaks up water fastest.
  8. Install. Level the dresser, anchor it to the wall with two L brackets into studs, set the sink in a bead of silicone, then connect the faucet and drain. Run the water for 10 minutes and check every joint with a dry paper towel.

If your dresser has a laminate top rather than solid wood, prime it with a bonding primer first, using the same approach as our guide to painting laminate furniture so the finish lasts.

Why "just use polyurethane" is not enough

A lot of tutorials say two coats of ordinary interior polyurethane will protect the top. In my experience it does not, at least not for long. Standard interior poly is fine on a bedroom dresser that sees a glass of water now and then. A bathroom top sees standing water every day, plus toothpaste, soap and hot steam.

Within a year, I have seen ordinary poly turn white around the faucet base and lift at the sink edge, letting water reach the wood. Marine or spar varnish flexes with the wood as humidity changes, and epoxy forms a thicker barrier. Either costs perhaps $30 more and saves the whole project.

The other common shortcut is skipping the edge seal on the sink cutout. That raw edge is end grain, and it will swell and lift the finish within months if left bare.

Plumbing: what to do yourself and what to hand off

Connecting a faucet and a P-trap to existing valves is a reasonable DIY job. Moving the drain or the supply lines in the wall is not, in most homes. If the drain outlet sits higher than the bottom of your sink tailpiece, or the supply valves are where a drawer must go, call a plumber for an hour of work rather than forcing the dresser around the pipes.

Use flexible braided supply lines, which are easier to route inside a converted drawer space than rigid copper.

Frequently asked questions

How do you waterproof a dresser for a bathroom vanity?

Seal the top with three or more coats of marine varnish or a coat of two-part epoxy, and seal every cut edge twice. Run silicone around the sink and the faucet base. Inside the cabinet, a coat of varnish on the floor of the case protects against small drips.

Can you keep the drawers working in a dresser vanity?

Usually you can keep the lower drawers by notching the backs to clear the trap and rebuilding them. The top drawer generally becomes a fixed false front because the sink bowl sits behind it.

What height should a dresser be for a vessel sink?

Look for a dresser around 30 to 32 inches tall. A vessel sink adds 5 to 6 inches, which brings the rim to roughly 36 inches, a comfortable height for most adults.
