The questions that reach Art of the Craft most, answered briefly, and the address to use when yours is not among them.
Some outbound links on this site are commercial and that is disclosed in our editorial policy, but a recommendation does not change wording because of a commercial relationship. If a tool is not worth the money, we say so.
Far fewer than most starter kits suggest. A hand saw, a chisel, a block plane, a square and a decent clamp will get a beginner through most small projects, and buying the expensive versions of five tools beats buying the cheap versions of fifteen.
Tension and needle problems cause most of these issues, not a broken machine. A fresh needle matched to the fabric weight and a properly threaded top tension solve the majority of jams people bring to a repair shop.
Materials plus honest hourly labor, not what feels comfortable to charge. Most new sellers underprice by half or more because they discount their own time, and that habit is hard to raise later once customers expect the lower price.
When a piece is ready, which is why the gaps between posts are uneven. Everything we have published stays available in the blog archive, and articles are updated with a dated note when a change alters the advice.
No. Scrap paper, an old notebook cover and basic glue will teach the actual skills. Expensive paper and tools matter once technique is solid, not before, and buying them early mostly adds pressure to make every page perfect.
For solid wood pieces with good bones, usually yes, both financially and in quality, since older furniture was often built with joinery that modern flat pack pieces skip entirely. For particleboard pieces, the time rarely pays off.
Write to info@aotc.info and ask. Questions that arrive more than once usually end up as an article, and the ones that arrive often end up on this page.
The blog archive is a good start, or look at the about page first if you would rather understand how the site is laid out.
